Before the beginning......

In 1982, Bruce Navarro (drums) and Steve Yohay (keyboard) were lawyers working in the labor arena in Washington, D.C.  Both had young sons attending a pre-school in Alexandria, VA. At the urging of their sons, the music teacher separately asked them to come to school one morning and "jam" for the children, with her husband -- a trombonist in the National Symphony-- as part of "Music in the Schools Week."  When they got to the school, they were surprised to find that they shared a love for rock and roll and the band was born.

It's Alive......

Steve introduced Bruce to Jeffrey Hinkley, a marvelous guitarist who in real life is a Ph.D Polymer Chemist with NASA.  (Jeffrey eventually relocated to Langley, VA.) Bruce, Steve and Jeffrey played for several years at parties in each other's homes, searching for other musicians and especially a singer who "knew the words."  Then, in 1987, Steve met Jim Greene at a neighborhood party.  Jim had grown up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and had played with a touring show band that performed throughout Europe. Steve invited him over for an evening to just jam.  By the end of the night, Jim's enthusiasm for playing was obvious and he became a part of the emerging band.

It Speaks......

Next came Dan Yager, who in 1988 joined the law firm in which Steve practiced.  Dan not only sang with the Capitol Hill Choral Society, but he had worked his way through the University of Nebraska as a DJ and he loved to perform.  In the years that followed, many gifted players appeared with the band.  Ray Bender, Dale Ray, and George Carlo, a friend, a colleague and a client respectively of Bruce's, became parts of the permanent musical landscape.  Ray, an energetic harmonica player, Dale, a rock solid bassist, and George's, ripping vocals, keys and guitar completed the band's musical foundation.

It Adapts......

BBB has had many gifted performers join us over the years.  On occasion, they still perform with the band.  They include female vocalists: Kym Burke, Danielle Westphal and Melissa Bronez; Charles (Reds) Adkins, bass guitar; Ken Giese, piano and guitar; Tim Bartl, drums; and Jim Gahres, who has been performing on piano and keyboards for over 35 years in Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville, Virginia.
